NDT for Beams, Columns, Slabs and Pile foundations

Ultrasonic Pulse Velocity Test
This test is used to measure the quality of concrete by velocity of ultrasonic waves. The velocities are affected by Homogeneity of Concrete, Presence of Cracks, Voids & Other Imperfections that quality of concrete. On structures correlation of velocity with strength is used to estimate the compressive strength of concrete in the structural element.

Rebound Hammer Test
This test measures the surface hardness of concrete. For new structures, the hardness reading is used to co-relate the strength of concrete. The hammer has to be used normal to the test surface, vertically (up of down) or horizontally depending on the structural element.

Half cell potential and carbonation test
Half cell potential test determines the probability of corrosion activity taking place at the point in the Reinforcement. A higher probability and not the extent of corrosion.

When the cover concrete is carbonated the process of corrosion enhances due to the reduction in the alkalinity surrounding the reinforcement bars. The estimation of carbonation depth thus helps in predicting the period of protection from corrosion.

Core cutting and compression testing
75mm of 100mm diameter cores are taken on site using state of the art core cutting machines. Cover meter is used to locate the reinforcement steel before core cutting. This prevents structural damage to the RCC member by avoiding the reinforcement. These cores are dressed in our lab and tested using standard compression testing methods to determine compressive strength and arrive at equivalent cube strength of concrete.

Reinforcement mapping
The method is used to assess reinforcement bar diameter and spacing of main bars and stirrups. For new structures it can be used to determine the exact usage of steel. In old buildings this is used to gather information on the reinforcement, not available or otherwise. This information is then used to prepare the structural drawings as constructed.

Pile integrity Test
Pile integrity test is used to assess the continuity of piles. With this test, necking or bulging and uniformity of quality of concrete is checked. Piles that are doubtful for integrity are taken up for Dynamic load testing along with some piles which are ok.

Pile Dynamic Test
Pile dynamic test is used to assess the load bearing capacity of pile. This test uses a hammer of a couple of tons to drop on the pile. Displacements are measured using a high tech instrument. This data is processed to arrive at he pile dynamic load bearing capacity as per IS-2911(part-1 section-1). This test is easy to conduct and requires very few site arrangements.

Preliminary Structural Assessment

Brief condition Survey Report

Aaryan conducts a preliminary visual inspection report and representative NDT report on select 5-10% of elements. Report includes visual inspection, photography and sample NDT results. Based on preliminary data, assessment is done whether the structure is suited for future use (in current or modified form). Requirement of prima facie additional strengthening or repairs is identified here. This is used for an overall assessment of the structure.

Comprehensive Structural Assessment
NDT and Condition Survey report
Performing NDT tests like UPV, Reinforcement Mapping, Half Cell, Core Testing etc. on upto 100% of structural elements. The purpose is to assess condition of structure and submit detailed condition survey report. The report includes detailed NDT test results containing individual test reports and summary report on condition survey.

Preparation of Structural Drawings
In many cases, structural drawings are not available. Aaryan prepares structural drawings based on current condition of the structure. This accounts for corrosion of steel and the deterioration in concrete quality due to ageing. Preparation of structural drawings is a necessary step for carrying out design calculations. Structural drawings of all structural elements including footings and all RCC members are done in this stage.

Preparation of preliminary estimates for BOQs.
Based on the intended use of the structure and the condition survey report, Aaryan works out a preliminary estimate of repairs or strengthening required. This is used for taking budgetary approvals at the customer end. The estimates are at a very broad level and are not a preparation of tender and do not include any detailed specifications.


Structural Redesign

Structural Redesign Calculations

With the inputs received from the condition survey report and structural drawings, Aaryan redesigns the structure for new loading conditions. A detailed report containing element wise redesign is provided with seismic considerations. Detailed drawings for each representative element are provided in this stage. Redesign statement includes treatment for each member and a summary BOQ (bill of quantities).

BOQ for contractor bidding with exact quantities and repair activity specifications. Aayan formulates a detailed tender allowing for contractors to bid exactly for the repairs or strengthening work specified in the tender.

Project Management and Quality Assurance
Aaryan sets up a project monitoring team with key resources, technical and supervisory for schedule, consumption, time and costs control. Preparation of detailed activity and schedule list is included in the scope of work.

Proper records are maintained for all material coming in the site, consumed and taken out of the site. Quantities billed consumed and measured are billed. Corelation report on site material consumption is prepared with incoming, outgoing material and planned schedules. As a part of the process, Aaryan verifies contractor bills and certifies them for payments. This ensures quality assurance of the work carried out by the contractor is done on time.


Structural Certification Stage

Structural Re testing post repairs

The repair and strengthening activity usually involves a lot of bonding, jacketing and steel addition as its activities. The effectiveness of bonding and jacketing can only be checking using specialized instruments and techniques for presence of voids. Certification of repairs is done by carrying out NDT to check effectiveness of repairs on select areas.

Structural Stability Certificate
Visual inspection of the completed site, thorough re-testing of critical elements, verification of drawings, checking on pmc reports is done during this process. Finally Aaryan issues a stability certificate for the structure.
