Mumbai Port Trust (MPT) announced that India’s longest ropeway would be constructed between Sewri and Elephanta Island in the Arabian Sea.
The ropeway project, which is aimed at boosting tourism, will be around eight km long and will cost approximately Rs 500 crore. It will take around 14 minutes from Sewri to Elephanta Island by a 20-seat cable car.
The proposed project will start from Haji Bunder in Sewri and go upto Elephanta Island. It will offer a bird’s eye view of mud flat, mangroves and flamingos in season.
The cable car will have a 3S system and ply on three ropes instead of the conventional system of a single rope. The project will be carried out on public, private partnership model and the concession period will be about 30 years.
MPT is also planning to have terminals at both ends. It has prepared a feasibility report for the project and floated an expression of interest for which a few international and domestic players have shown interest.
