Government to commence housing schemes for indigenous people of Sri Lanka

22 August 2011: Sri Lankan government is to commence special housing programmes for the indigenous people in September 2011.

The Construction, Engineering services Housing and Common Amenities Ministry is to initiate this housing programme. The housing schemes are to be constructed in Dambana, Henanthigala, Dalukana, Rathugala, Wakare and Pollabeddha. The government has allocated a sum of Rs 80 million (approx Rs 364 crore) for the purpose for 2011 and more funds are to be allocated as it will be an ongoing programme.The houses that are to be built for the indigenous people are to be constructed in a manner that will suit the culture of the Veddha community.
