Ikea plans to install solar panels in UK stores

2 August 2011: Ikea Group plans to install solar panels on its UK stores as part of a goal to get all of its energy from renewable sources.

Ikea bought a 12.3-mw wind farm in Huntly, northeast Scotland, from Good Energies Capital, to cover 30 per cent of Ikea’s UK electricity use. The solar panels, totaling 2.1 MW, will be fitted on 10 stores, providing an average of 5 per cent of each shop’s power.

The solar panels to be installed, are made by GS Solar Fujian, and will cost around 4 million pounds. Denmark’s Vestas Wind Systems A/S supplied the turbines for the wind farm.
