PLN plans small scale coal gasification plants

16 June 2010: PT Perusahaan Listrik Negara is planning to build a number of small-scale coal gasification power plants with a combined capacity of 800 MW to replace its costly diesel-fueled plants.

Currently the company is calculating on how many plants are needed to generate 800 MW and studying the technology. The technology is likely to come from Germany, India and China.

PLN had estimated that it will cost around $1 million (approx Rs 46 crore) for every 1 MW of coal regasification capacity created, meaning it’s looking at spending $800 million (approx Rs 3,680 crore) on the new plants.

PLN plans to build the first of its coal regasification plants in Sangatta, East Kalimantan, where it will start constructing three small-scale plants in September 2010. It is aiming to have the facilities up and running by July 2011.

Another plant is likely to be build in Palu, Central Sulawesi and three more will be built in West Sulawesi. More coal gasification plants will be built in other parts of Indonesia to reach the 800 MW goal.
