Victoria Park tunnel to be ready in November
7 April 2011: The Victoria Park tunnel in Auckland, New Zealand, is likely to be opened to traffic in November 2011.
The tunnel runs to a length of 450 mtrs between St Mary’s Bay and Wellington Street and is located 10m below the ground. The project will add a northbound tunnel with three lanes to the existing Victoria Park viaduct. The tunnel is being built at a cost 340 million NZD ($265 million).
Construction on the tunnel commenced in November 2009 with completion originally scheduled for February 2012. The tunnel is the first of seven roads of national significance (RoNS) to enter the construction phase. The project is expected to increase the capacity of State Highway 1 between Auckland Harbour Bridge and Newmarket.
