Food inflation eases on cheaper pulses

12 November 2010: Food inflation, based on the annual Wholesale Price Index (WPI), increased 12.3 per cent during the week ended 30 October 2010, lower than the previous week's Y-O-Y rise of 12.85 per cent.

The fuel price index climbed 10.67 per cent, the same as the previous reported week, Government data released on 11 November 2010 showed.

Despite the easing of the trend, inflation in products such as onions, milk and fruits continued to remain high on a Y-O-Y basis. Inflation was 12.59 per cent this time last year.

On a Y-O-Y basis, the annual rate of inflation in the Primary Articles group was up 14.87 per cent for the latest reported week compared with 15.43 per cent for the previous week.

Sequentially, the index for this group gained 0.3 per cent as the index for ‘Food Articles' group surged 0.4 per cent due to higher prices of barley, fruits and vegetables and egg (2 per cent each) and fish-inland, poultry chicken and gram (1 per cent each). However, prices of masur (3 per cent), arhar, moong and urad (2 per cent each) and bajra (1 per cent) declined.

The index for ‘Non-Food Articles' group dropped 0.1 per cent due to lower prices of guar seed, raw silk, niger seed and cotton seed (2 per cent each) and groundnut seed (1 per cent). However, the prices of safflower (12 per cent), castor seed (3 per cent) and raw rubber and copra (1 per cent each) moved up.
