11 major road stretches in Delhi to be upgraded

23 February 2010: New Delhi Municipal Council is planning to give a new look to 11 major road stretches in the capital and give it an altogether swanky look as part of its streetscaping project.

Work on two such major roads namely Mother Teresa Crescent and Sardar Patel Marg have recently been completed with the USP being the creation of a unique green buffer zone between the road and the footpath to add an aesthetic appeal to the ambience of the area for pedestrians and commuters alike.

The other roads which will be wearing a new look soon include Baba Kharak Singh Marg, Tees January Marg, Mandir Marg, Aurobindo Marg, Brigadier Hoshiyar Singh Marg, Old R.K.Ashram Marg and Subramaniam Bharti Marg. The project costing about Rs 65 crore is expected to be complete by August 2010.

The nature of work being undertaken on these roads includes re-carpeting of roads, footpath improvement with tiles or red sandstone flooring, creation of a green buffer and other horticulture works including planting of samplings, low-height bushes and plants, creation of a cycling or jogging track and installation of road sign-boards. In addition, up-gradation of electrical and drainage works, construction of a pedestrian plaza replete with lighting to provide an enlarged sitting area and surface improvement of existing parking on these roads is also part of the project.
