Bengal plans shelter to poor

24 August 2010: The West Bengal Government plans to spend close to Rs 1 lakh for construction of each of the new house and Rs 60,000 for renovation of the existing ones.

The state government has allocated Rs 400 crore for the construction of new dwelling units and renovation of existing ones for all the homeless slum-dwellers during the current financial year. The funds will be made available to those who were not beneficiaries of the JNNURM and remained without a shelter.

The Government had allocated about Rs 500 crore for the purpose of building dwelling units and renovating the old ones for the urban poor people during the last financial year of 2009-10.

An approval and monitoring committee at the state-level has been formed to ensure proper utilisation of the funds. Municipalities will be able to arrange for construction of low-cost safe dwelling units for the urban poor through the project.

The state government has received proposals from 105 municipalities so far and has also allotted Rs 54 crore to 100 of them with the concurrence from the Finance Department. The proposals include those for renovation and upgradation of 17,864 houses and building of 2,703 houses. The approval and monitoring committee has approved proposals of 43 municipalities, close to 2,684 houses would be renovated and 1,177 houses would be newly constructed with the allocated sum.
