Court refuses to interfere with construction of sewage plant

23 February 2010: The Madras High Court has reportedly declined to interfere with the construction of a sewage storage-cum-treatment plant in a lake land at Ka.Kuppam village in Villupuram taluk in Tamil Nadu.

The court made it clear that before the plant was made functional, the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board should insist on testing the norms of the effluents discharged. Only thereafter, the plant should be allowed to be made operational.

The grievance of the petitioner, V. Sampath, was that the land was part of a lake. Therefore, the sewage treatment plant should not be constructed. In his counter, the Villupuram Collector said the government had issued orders as early as in February 2007 sanctioning the scheme at a cost of Rs 27.63 crore.

Only 10 acre was proposed to be used for the plant. The remaining 40 acre will be maintained as tank.
