Foundation stone for Rangamandira soon

23 August 2010: foundation stone is likely to be laid for the third time for Rangamandira at Bondel in Karnataka.

The estimated cost for the project of Rs 13 crore is up five times from Rs 4 crore estimated in 2001, when the first foundation stone was laid at the Kadri Deer Park on Rajyotsava Day in the 2001.

Initially, three places were identified for the fine arts theatre -- near Mangala Stadium and Wenlock hospital and Urwa, but had to be rejected following public protests that they were needed for other developmental activities. Finally, Kadri Deer Park was selected after the animals were shifted to Pilikula. Again the Deer Park site was shifted citing it was not spacious to house-allied projects like buildings to house the offices of the Beary, Konkani and Tulu academies. Kannada and culture department assistant director Mangala Naik said a seven-acre space was available at Bondel for the theatre.

The present location is under the PWD. In the 60s, the PWD acquired 158 acre and handed over 28 acre to KEB. As KEB has reportedly lost the documents, a fresh survey was being initiated to ascertain how much land remained vacant at that site. PWD superintending engineer Balakrishna said the dispute has been resolved and 17 acre vacant land was available at the site.
