Trichy city to include some suburbs V
23 August 2010: The Trichy Corporation has decided to expand its boundaries and take infrastructure development to suburban areas deprived of major projects.
Plans are afoot to accommodate Thiruverumbur town and other suburbs in Trichy so as to expand the city from the present 146 sq km to around 240 sq km. However, the areas to be annexed with the city corporation have not been finalised yet. The idea is to bridge the disparity in basic amenities and infrastructure within the city limits and the suburbs. Development in panchayats and town panchayats on the periphery of cities is slower as multi crore development projects are implemented only in urban areas. Though civic bodies in the periphery of Trichy are poised to get more facilities once they come into the fold of Trichy Corporation some of the civic body chiefs have raised apprehensions over the plan, fearing they will lose their powers.
