Al-salam street tunnel project by late 2011
14 June 2011: Around 80 per cent work has been completed on Al-salam street tunnel project in Abu Dhabi and the tunnel is progressing as per schedule to be completed by late 2011.
Al-salam street tunnel project, worth AED5 billion (approx $1.3 billion), will run 15 metres underground below Al Salam Street from Abu Dhabi’s northeast entrance to near Port Zayed and is expected to divert a significant amount of traffic from the congested city centre.
Around two km of the tunnel will be embedded nearly 15 mtrs underground while the rest will be open and near the surface level. The project also includes development of road networks stretching more than 20km on the eastern edge of the capital towards the Northern Emirates.
South Korea's Samsung Construction is carrying out the project, linking the Tourist Club and other parts of the city to Reem Island, where at least 100,000 inhabitants will live. The causeways to the island have already been completed and are being used, though they have not been inaugurated officially.
