Amerat dam to be ready by December 2011

10 August 2010: The Amerat Heights flood protection dam, a key component of Wadi Adai Flood Protection Scheme, is likely to be completed in December 2011.

Currently, drilling and grouting is underway at the dam site which is located at northern area of Al Amerat bowl plain, upstream of the Wadi Adai gorge entrance. The project is the first of seven dams planned by the government as part of the ambitious Wadi Adai Flood Protection System.

The seven dams will have a storage capacity of about 87 million cubic mtrs. In Amerat alone six dams - one main dam, one diversion dam, and four saddle dams have been planned.

A global construction firm, Strabag, was selected by the government to build the Al Amerat Heights dam, also called as B15 dam. With some 22 million cubic mtrs of storage capacity, the Amerat Heights dam aims to primarily protect Qurum area and secondly the Amerat expanding urban and commercial development.

The dam, besides the main components, will also include two service spillways and two bottom outlets to empty the reservoir and allow downstream recharge in the wadi beds.
