Emal plans Expansion

15 June 2011: UAE based Emirates Aluminium (Emal), a JV of government investment firm Mubadala Development Company and Dubai Aluminum Company plans to expand large-scale aluminum smelter in Abu Dhabi at a cost up to $4.5 billion (approx.20,025 crore) which covers a six sq km site. Financing for the expansion will be given by shareholders.

In December 2009, the Company started production of the first phase of its smelter, of cost $5.7 billion (approx.2, 565 crore) to implement, and reached full production capacity of 750,000 tonne in January 2011.

The company waits for internal approval with phase two at the smelter, which would see the capacity double to 1.5 million tpa of aluminum and is expected to start by December 2013.
