GACA rules out plans for Makkah airport
24 June 2011: Saudi Arabia's General Authority of Civil Aviation (GACA) has ruled out plans for an airport in Makkah.
The proposed plan was rejected because of the distance that airports are required to be from the city centre, the difficulties posed by the mountainous geography of the area, and the close proximity of Makkah to Jeddah.
