Jordan's first nuclear reactor to be operational by 2019
Jordan's first nuclear reactor is scheduled to be operational in 2019. The facility will add an additional 1,000 megawatts to the country's electricity generation capacity. The Jordan Atomic Energy Commission (JAEC) is currently reviewing financial bids from short-listed vendors for the construction of a Generation III reactor in Majdal near Mafraq, some 40 KM northeast of Amman. The bidders are Canadian AECL, Russian Atomstroy Export and a French-Japanese joint venture comprising Areva and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries.
