Bangladesh, India to set up border bazaars

28 December 2010: Bangladesh and India are working to set up a number of haats - or local markets - along the border as a way of easing access for local traders and to curb smuggling.

The first markets will begin in India's northeastern state of Tripura that has proposed seven locations. The Union Government of India is planning to supply surplus electricity to Bangladesh, referring to the 750 MW power plant that is being planned at Palatona in Tripura, for which Bangladesh and India are making a joint effort. The Bangladesh Government earlier this month gave permission to Indian authorities to transport heavy equipment required for the power plant.
