Cairn Group mulls school libraries in Sri Lanka
12 March 2011: The Presidential Secretariat, Sri Lanka and Cairn Lanka has signed a MoU for the construction of 27 libraries in some of the least-advantaged schools in Moneragala District. This Presidential Library Project is a concept of the President Mahinda Rajapaksa to improve the reading habit among Sri Lankan children and thereby enable them to improve knowledge, skills, and good attitudes.
The group which is providing financial assistance has pledged Rs 24 million towards this project. It will be funding the construction of the libraries and purchase of the required furniture and books. Construction work on the first seven libraries is already in progress.
