China funds electrification of Sri Lanka's Eastern ProvinceRajasthan
18 November 2011: The Sri Lankan government is planning to obtain a US$ 33 million credit facility from China to finance electrification of Sri Lanka's Eastern Province. The Cabinet of ministers on 16 November 2011 approved a proposal forwarded by President Mahinda Rajapaksa to obtain the credit facility through the Export Import Bank of China. The electrification project will provide electricity to 268 villages in the Trincomalee and Batticaloa Districts of the Province. The project is expected to serve the increasing needs of the people in rural areas in the Province and will enhance the economic potential in the area by increasing productivity, creating new employment opportunities and improving the living standards of the community. The Power and Energy Ministry is aiming to reach 100 percent electrification in the Province by 2012.
