Dhaka chalks out capex plan to dredge rivers

20 January 2010: The Bangladesh Government has drawn out $80 million (approx Rs 364 crore) plan to de-silt its 310 rivers to restore their navigability, control floods and ensure irrigation.

Of the rivers, dredging work is likely to commence soon in four major rivers - Jamuna, Meghna, Brahmaputra and the Padma. The government has been in talks with India and Nepal for greater water flow during the summer months. The Union Government of India has offered to help Bangladesh in dredging and financial assistance.
