Eco tourism projects in Kalpitiya gather steam

13 July 2010: Tourism development in Sri Lanka has reportedly gained momentum with a large number of investments approaching the country.

Under a project for tourism development Kalpitiya has been identified as a preferable location for Eco tourism development and the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority has allocated a land of 5, 000 acre to be developed in the zone.

The Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA) has provided eight investors with lands to develop tourism hotels and resorts, despite issues arising on acquisition of land in the area. The projects are undergoing surveys, conducted by the authorities on environmental matters, Sooriyagoda said adding that one project invested by Dutch Bay Resorts, has completed the survey and the final phase of the studies will be over soon.

Recently, two investments from India and Maldives were approved spread upon 200 acre. Qube Lanka Leisure owned by an Indian firm will be investing $16.8 million (approx Rs 78.12 crore) while Sun Resorts in Maldives will invest $ 1.2 billion (approx Rs 5,580 crore).

The Kalpitiya project looks forward to complete 2,000 rooms by 2012 and another 3,000 by 2015 to cater to the growing tourist arrivals.
