Filling sea land for new city in Sri Lanka to begin soon
18 April 2011: The Sri Lanka Government is to begin filling the sea land in May 2011 to build the proposed Port City attached to Colombo.
The sea land to be filled is from the breakwater of the Colombo South Harbor to the Galle Face in front of the Presidential Secretariat. The Sri Lanka Government is to reclaim between over 400 acre of sea land to build the Port City at a cost of $300 million (approx Rs 1,350 crore).
The new city to be built in a 450-acre land created by filling the sea land will be a separate administrative unit. The buildings to be constructed in the new city are to be above 35 storeyed. The proposed offshore city, to be divided into three segments- business, residential and leisure, will be developed into a modern city with high rises, hotels, residential apartments, shopping malls, and other space to cater to the public needs.
