Investors short listed for Sri Lanka's Hambanthota harbor project
25 July 2011: 13 investors shortlisted for the first stage of Magampura harbour project when Request for Proposals (REP) invited and managed to secure US$ one billion (approx Rs 4450 crore) for value addition and transshipment with port related duty imposed.
The proposals will be forwarded for Cabinet approval and the projects will commence from September 2011. The project is to come into two stages. These investors will be allocated 100 hectares under phase I and an additional 300 hectares under the phase II. The phase I includes the tax-less investment which comprises a sugar, fertilizer and cement plants, two car assembly plants and petro chemicals related investments. The phase II of the harbour contains 10 berths which will be ready by 2014.
The REP for the second stage of the project will be invited in October 2011.
