Japan allocates funds to strengthen healthcare services in Sri Lanka

18 November 2011: The Government of Japan has allocated Rs 149 million (approx Rs 14.9 crore ) to strengthen essential health care services in the Northern Province of Sri Lanka.The grant, allocated from Japan's Non-Project Grant Aid counterpart funds, has been made in response to a request by the Government of Sri Lanka.

Underscoring that the revival of health care services in the once conflict affected Northern areas is of utmost importance for ensuring the overall welfare of the people in these areas, the Embassy said in a statement that the funds provided will be used to promote the effective functioning of the health services in the Northern Province. Accordingly, Rs 51 million will be used to construct a Regional Training Centre in Jaffna, Rs. 25 million to provide medical equipment to ICU at District General Hospital in Kilinochchi, Rs. 44 million to construct Nursing Officers Quarters at the District General Hospital Kilinochchi and Rs. 29million to construct a blood bank for District General Hospital in Vavuniya.
