Lanka aviation sector eyes massive development

24 March 2011: The Government of Sri Lanka is planning a new initiative to enhance the domestic and international aviation sector. Under which, the aircraft fleets of national career SriLankan Airlines and budget airline Mihin Lanka will be increased to 30.

New flight destinations are also to be established. The countries second international airport in Hambantota will be opened for business by the latter part of 2012. Under the first stage, one million passengers and 45 thousand metric tons of cargo are to be handled through the new international airport.

The country expects to reserve Katunayake Bandaranaike International Airport for only passenger travel. Accordingly, an air terminal is to be constructed to enable to handle 60 million passengers in a year at this airport. It is also hopeful of the foreign arrivals in the country to rise sharply in the coming years.
