New port inaugurated in Hambantota

19 November 2010: Mahinda Rajapaksa, President of Sri Lanka, on 18 November 2010, inaugurated a new port in the southern city of Hambantota.

The port located in Rajapaksa’s home district of Hambantota has been named after the President. The project is funded by the China Government and the first of the four-phase project has been completed at a cost of $672 million (approx Rs 3,024 crore).

According to soruces, more than 2,000 ha adjoining the harbour will be declared as a SEZ to boost commercial and industrial activities.
