Nuclear power plant inaugurated at Chashma project
13 May 2011: Yousuf Raza Gilani, Prime Minister of Pakistan, on 12 May 2011, inaugurated a nuclear power plant at the Chashma project built with Chinese assistance.
The second unit of the Chashma Nuclear Power Plant in Punjab province, which will produce 330MW of electricity, was completed more than three months ahead of schedule. It is the country's third operational nuclear plant.
The Pakistan Government have inked a deal to build two more atomic plants at the Chashma site. The two plants were expected to be completed by 2016-17. The two power plants - C-3 and C-4 - were "already under construction" at the Chashma site and will help the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission to meet the government- assigned target of generating 8,800 MW of nuclear power by 2030.
