Sports medical units in Sri Lanka hospitals
22 December 2010: Health Ministry of Sri Lanka plans to establish sports medical units in every major hospital of the country. Ministry has taken measures to begin testing all Sri Lankan athletes, who are participating in international sports, for banned substances.
The only gold medalist from Sri Lanka, boxer Manju Wanniarachchi, 30, at the recent Commonwealth Games held in India found to be positive for the performance enhancing drug nandrolone. He is likely to face a two-year ban and lose his medal after his second urine sample also tested positive for the banned anabolic steroid.
