Sri Lanka allocates funds for organic fertilizer

6 July 2010: The Sri Lanka Government has allocated Rs 22.5 crore to popularise the production and use of organic fertilizer in the country.

The aim of the government is to minimise the use of imported chemical fertilizer through the popularisation of organic fertilizer among farmers. The Sri Lanka Government spends Rs 6,500 crore annually for the fertiliser subsidy. This subsidy goes mainly to the rice industry.

The Organic Fertilizer Bureau of Agricultural Development and Agrarian Services, Sri Lanka reports say that already 12,000 acre of paddy are cultivated in Hambanthota, Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa, Monaragala and Ampara districts with the use of organic fertilizer instead of chemical fertiliser.

Department of Agriculture has commenced 10 research centers island wide for popularization of organic fertilizer. The Bureau is to provide Rs 5,00,000 each for these centers to improve the infrastructure of these centers.
