Sri Lanka allocates funds to rebuild reservoirs
29 January 2011: The Sri Lanka Government has allocated Rs 90 crore to rebuild the country's water reservoirs in the North, North Central and Eastern Provinces damaged due to the heavy rains and floods.
The government plans to immediately rebuild 109 tanks in 11 Districts, state-run ITN reported. The President has given instructions to the relevant authorities to reconstruct the tanks within one month.
Measures are already being taken to begin reconstruction work on the reservoirs in the Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa, Trincomalee, Batticaloa, and Ampara Districts where there was heavy damage to the tanks. Also discussions are underway to rebuild 2,000 small reservoirs destroyed by the LTTE during the war.
