Sri Lanka mulls another hydropower plant
7 March 2011: The Sri Lanka Electricity Board is planning to start the construction of another hydropower plant in next month. Sources reveals that, the Broad land hydropower plant will be constructed at Kithulgala which will add 35 megawatt to the national grid. Once completed, the plant is expected to generate 137 GWh of electrical energy annually.
The Kithulgala Broadland hydropower plant is the last hydropower plant to be established along the Kelani River that flows to sea from outskirts of the Colombo city. The board has estimated the cost for the Kithulgala Broadland hydropower project (BHP) will be US $ 82 million (approx Rs 369 crore). A Chinese company has been contracted to construct the plant. The state can earn US $ 2.4 million (approx Rs 11 crore) per year through carbon trading.
