Sri Lanka names first coal power plant

21 March 2011: Sri Lanka has named its first coal power plant as Lakvijaya meaning the victory of Sri Lanka. The Lakvijaya Power House that adds 300 MW to the national grid will be opened by President Mahinda Rajapaksa on 22 March 2011 at Norochcholai, Puttalam in Northwestern Province. The foundation of the project was laid in may 2006.

The coal power plant was built using a $455 million (approx Rs 2,049 crore) loan from China's EXIM bank. Much of the construction work was carried out by China National Machinery Import and Export Corporation. The second phase is scheduled to be completed by 2013 and is expected to inject 600 MW to the national grid.
