Sri Lanka purchases landslide threats detection machines
22 December 2011: Sri Lanka government has purchased an instrument to study the soil and rock layers of the landslide prone areas in order to detect landslide threats in advance. Landslide Division chief of Sri Lanka Building Research Institute R.M.N. Bandara says that the machine will be used to identify the landslide prone areas and the residents will be evacuated and relocated in safer areas.
The government has spent Rs. 16 million to acquire the landslide detector. Nuwara Eliya, Kandy, Matale, Badulla, Ratnapura, Kegalle, Kalutara, Hambantota, Galle and Matara districts have been identified as the districts with most landslide prone areas.
