Sri Lanka sets up mumps vaccine in national immunization programme
24 August 2011: The Epidemiology Unit will include mumps vaccine in the immunization program and introduce the Measles, Mumps, Rubella Vaccine (MMRV) into the program.
Earlier immunization against only measles and rubella was provided with the MR vaccine.The mumps is generally a mild self-limiting disease. Under the new immunization schedule children will be vaccinated with the first dose of MMR vaccine at the age of one year and the second dose will be given at three years of age.
The Ministry expects to spend around Rs. 15 crore per annum to vaccine 6, 00,000 children per annum free of charge throughout the network of children's and maternity clinics island wide.
