Sri Lanka to rehabilitate IDP locals

19 November 2011: The Sri Lankan government is going to allocate over Rs. 1.3 billion to complete the resettlement of families remaining in the welfare centers in their native villages. The Ministry has already resettled almost 97 percent of the over 290,000 people displaced following the end of the war in May 2009 in their native villages.

Accordingly, 1,687 families will be relocated in the Mullaitivu District, 1272 families in Muttur in the Trincomalee District and 166 families will be relocated in the Mannar District, with the assistance of the Security Forces in the North and East. The government plans to complete the resettlement of the Internally Displaced persons (IDPs) by the end of the year. Each family will receive a core house with a permanent toilet in addition to common dug wells and other facilities.
