Sri Lanka to unveil first coal power plant
19 March 2011: Sri Lanka's newly built first coal power plant is to be officially commissioned on 22 March 2011. The President Mahinda Rajapaksa will open the first phase of the coal power plant situated in Norochcholai in the Puttalam district of Northwestern Province.
The first phase of the Norochcholai coal power plant is to inject 300 MW to the main grid while the second phase is scheduled to be completed by 2013 and is expected to inject 600 MW to the national grid. The construction of the project was started in May 2006. The amount of $455 million (approx Rs 2,049 crore) which was borrowed from China's EXIM bank was used for the project. Much of the construction work was carried out by China National Machinery Import and Export Corporation.
