Sri Lanka unveils construction of Colombo South harbor terminals

17 December 2011: Sri Lanka President Mahinda Rajapaksa on 16 December 2011, inaugurated the construction of the first container terminal of the Colombo South harbor under the project on the expansion of the Colombo harbor.

The terminal will be the first of the four 1200 mtres long container terminals of the port. Each of these terminals will have the capacity of 2.4 million TEUs.The construction of the initial 600 mters of the terminal will be completed by 2014. The rest of the construction will be completed in November 2016.

Colombo South Harbour will be located west of the present south-west Breakwater in an area of approximately 600 hectares. The proposed harbour will have 4 terminals of over 1,200m in length each to accommodate 3 berths with depths of 18m and provision to deepen to 23m to accommodate deeper draft vessels in future. The government has identified the expansion of the Port of Colombo as the flagship development endeavour in the current decade, targeted at giving Colombo a competitive edge over other regional ports.
