Sri Lanka's hydropower project nears completion

18 April 2011: Over 75 per cent of the construction of Sri Lanka's last large scale hydropower project has been completed so far.

The Upper Kotmale Hydropower Project, at a cost of US$ 350 million is mainly funded by the Japan Government under a loan agreement through the Japan Bank for International Cooperation.The project is being implemented by the Ceylon Electricity Board under the supervision of the Ministry of Power and Energy.

The turbines are being fixed in the power plant now in the Upper Kothmale hydropower project. The project is likely to begin power generation by December 2011. When completed, the run of river hydropower project consisting of two 75MW units will add 150 MW to the national grid to produce 409GWh energy per annum.

The Sri Lanka Government secured financial support in March 2002 from the Japan Government to implement the project, signing of Loan Agreement SL-P74 in March 28, 2002.
