Sri Lanka's new airport to provide various jobs

4 March 2011: The new international airport that is being built in Mattala in the Hambanthota District of Sri Lanka's Southern Province will open 1,500 direct and 50,000 indirect job opportunities. When completed, the new airport, alternative to the Bandaranaike International Airport in Katunayake, will support both international and domestic travel and air-sea cargo transshipment in conjunction with the Hambantota Harbor.

The airport, being built at a cost of $ 209 million (approx Rs 941 csrore) with the financial assistance from the Chinese government, will be a key component in the development efforts of the Eastern and Southern coasts. The state-of-the-art airport is being built to be compatible with the landing of the latest Airbus A380 aircraft. It has been designed according to recommendations of the International Civil Aviation Organization.
