Upper Kothmale project on scehdule in Sri Lanka

27 April 2011: Construction work on the Upper Kothmale hydropower project that includes Sri Lanka’s longest tunnel is progressing as per schedule.

The project is on track to be completed by December 2011. Erection of turbines is currently underway. The run of the river hydropower project, comprising two 75MW units will add 150MW to the national grid and is expected to have a total generation capacity of 409GWH annually.

The hydropower project involves a tunnel built to transport water from Talawakeleto to the hydro power plant at Niyamgamdora. The headrace tunnel, with a diameter of 4.5 mtrs and a length of 13km runs north from the dam towards the Pundal Oya Falls before turning to the northwest towards the existing Kothmale dam and reservoir. The tunnel was constructed by Japanese firm Maeda Corporation which was awarded the contract to complete civil works on the project. The project also involved construction of a 35m high, 180m long concrete dam.

The Sri Lankan Government secured financial support from the Government of Japan to implement the Upper Kothmale project in March 2002. The cost of the Upper Kothmale Hydropower Project is estimated at $350 million (approx Rs 1,557.5 crore).
