Water filling to Upper Kotmale reservoir begins

16 December 2011: The filling of the water to the reservoir of the Upper Kotmale Hydro Power Project commenced on 15 Decemeber 2011.

During the filling, the famous St. Clair waterfall will be out of scene, the official says. The testing of the generators will be done before 2012. The Upper Kothmale Hydro Power Project is a run of river hydropower project with an installed capacity of 150MW consisting of two 75MW units. When completed, it will produce 409GWh per year. Upper Kotmale Hydropower Project, at a cost of US$ 350 million is mainly funded by the Government of Japan under a loan agreement through the Japan Bank for International Cooperation on an Overseas Development Assistance (ODA) loan executed between the two governments. The project is implemented by the Ceylon Electricity Board under the supervision of the Ministry of Power and Energy.
