Work on Northern rail track to Kankasanthurai to commence soon

25 January 2010: Sri Lanka Railways is likely to begin the construction of the Northern rail track to Kankasanthurai soon.

The 159 km long Northern rail track consists of 85 bridges, 16 stations and 12 sub stations. The reconstruction of the track in the Northern region will be carried out in three phases. In the Phase I, the track from Vavuniya to Omanthai is to be laid. The track will be completed from Omanthai to Pallai in the Phase II and laying of the rail track from Pallai to Kankasanthurai will take place under the Phase III.

Sri Lanka's Transport Ministry recently signed and agreement with the IRCON International, India, for the reconstruction of the 90 km segment of the rail track from Omanthai to Pallai at a cost of $185 million (approx Rs 851 crore).
