Work on hydropower project in Sri Lanka on halt
9 August 2011: The ministry of Sri Lanka have halted construction work on a hydropower plant on the Mahaweli River at Getambe in the Central Province due to the protests from environmentalists and residents in the area.
Environmentalists and residents have complained that the blasts on the center of Mahaweli River at Getambe have created cracks on houses on the hills on both sides of the river. The construction work has also threatened the endemic fish in that particular part of the river.
