Wullar Lake may affect Neelum-Jhelum project

16 May 2011: The Indian project of Wullur lake is likely to hit the 930MW Neelum-Jehlum Power Project as well as the 1000MW Mangla Dam on Jehlum River, depriving Pakistan of the cheap hydal power.

These projects will destroy the environment, ecology, wild life, livestock and human life in 208 km area of Azad Jammu Kashmir from Kel to Muzaffaraabd.

Wullar Lake is a natural lake and any kind of construction on it with any design is not approved by the Indus Water Treaty. India will set up a spillway gate to control the water which is harmful for Pakistan.

The Kishanganga river water will be diverted to a 22 kilometer long tunnel in to the Wullar lake. The tunnel is about to be completed in spite of the protest of people of the Gurez valley. This diversion will change the course of the Neelum by around 204 km. It will finally join the Jhelum through Wullar lake near Bandipore town in Baramulla district of Indian administered Kashmir.
