Jharkhand was formed on 1 November 2000, by bifurcation of Bihar. It accounts for about 45 per cent of the geographical area of undivided Bihar and tribals constitute nearly one-third of the state population.

The division has had a favourable impact on Jharkhand. Most of the mineral resources such as iron ore and coal were bestowed to Jharkhand while most of the population remained with residual Bihar. Jharkhand also had the royalty income from mining activities and heavy industries such as Telco and Tisco.
