Jharkhand was formed on 1 November 2000, by bifurcation of Bihar. It accounts for
about 45 per cent of the geographical area of undivided Bihar and tribals constitute
nearly one-third of the state population.
The division has had a favourable impact on Jharkhand. Most of the mineral resources
such as iron ore and coal were bestowed to Jharkhand while most of the population
remained with residual Bihar. Jharkhand also had the royalty income from mining
activities and heavy industries such as Telco and Tisco.
Project Investments
According to the 33rd Quarterly Survey of Projects Investment conducted by Projects
Today, as of 31 December 2008, the state had 583 projects worth Rs 1,97,349 crore
in various stages of planning and implementation.
The government agencies are investing in coal based power, power transmission, iron
and steel, coal mining, railways, and irrigation.
