Sikkim nestled in the Himalayas is the least populated and third smallest state
areawise in India. It has become one of India's most visited states, owing to its
reputation of cleanliness, scenic beauty and political stability. The economy is
largely agrarian. Sikkim has the highest production and largest cultivated area
of cardamom in India.
Because of the hilly terrain, and lack of reliable transportation infrastructure,
there are no large-scale industries. Breweries, distilleries, tanning and watch-making
are the main industries in the state, located in the southern reaches of the state,
primarily in the towns of Melli and Jorethang. The state has an impressive growth
rate of 8.3%, which is the second highest in the country after Delhi.
Projects Investment in Sikkim
According to the 42nd Quarterly Survey of Projects Investment conducted by Projects Today, as of 31
March 2011, the state had 66 projects worth Rs 18,667 crore in various stages of planning and implementation. The project implementation ratio is 66.94 per cent, compared to the national average of 46.17 per cent.
