Uttar Pradesh is the most populous state in the country and fifth largest in terms
of area. Also popularly know as U.P. the northern province covers a large part of
the highly fertile and densely populated upper Gangetic plain. It produces 38% of
India's Wheat-production, 20% of Paddy, 21% of Sugarcane, 34% of Groundnut, 17.5%
of Rape-seed, 8% of Fruits and 14% of Vegetables. The state is the leading producer
in India for Sugarcane, Vegetables and Potatoes. It has the distinction of producing
4% of world's wheat. It also has the largest livestock population and highest milk
production in India.
Project Investments in Uttar Pradesh
According to the 42nd Quarterly Survey of Projects Investment conducted by ProjectsToday, as of 31
March 2011, Uttar Pradesh had 2,047 projects worth Rs.209,408 crore in various stages of planning and implementation.
The state observed an almost comparable project implementation ratio of 60.32 per cent, compared to the national average of 46.17 per cent.
Major industries attracting investment are Coal/Lignite and hydel based power.
