Jindal Steel & Power (JSPL) will invest Rs 24,000 crore in two phases to increase the capacity of its Raigarh Steel Plant in Chhattisgarh by seven million tpa (tonne per annum). The Chhattisgarh steel plant has an existing capacity of three million tonne.
Raigarh Steel Plant expansion is part of Jindal Steel’s ambitious growth plan to have 20 million tpa steel making capacity by 2020.
Jindal Steel & Power (JSPL) intends to expand the Chhattisgarh steel plant capacity by four million tpa in Phase-I with an investment of Rs 15,000 crore and in Phase-II Jindal plans to expand the capacity by three million tpa with an investment of Rs 9,000 crore. Phase-I is expected to be completed within three years after the commencement of work.
Jindal Steel & Power Orissa plant is facing delays because of non-availability of coal and iron ore linkages. The first phase of the steel mill with a capacity of two million tpa was to be commissioned in March 2013. However, it now seems to be highly unlikely. The entire integrated steel plant with a full capacity of six million tpa was to be completed by 2015 as per the original schedule.
JSPL will also be utilising about Rs 9,000 crore on its greenfield steel project, having 3 million tpa capacity, proposed to be located in Patratu, Jharkhand.

India’s steel production capacity is estimated to exceed 100 million tonne in 2013 and the production is expected to reach 275 million tonne by 2020.
