India's Largest Database on New Projects
September 16,
2006: With the country's IT sector facing a severe manpower crunch, the Government
proposes to set up about 30 Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs)
over the next few years. The expansion would entail an expenditure of around Rs.3,000
crore.
In a run-up to
the Eleventh Plan, the Ministry of Human Resources Development has sent a
proposal to the Planning Commission for setting up the IIITs across different
States on a public-private partnership basis. They will be on the same lines as
the three existing IIITs in Bangalore, Hyderabad and Allahabad.
The commission
opined that the IIITs will not be allocated State-wise as small States may not
have the capacity to sustain such institutions, whereas States like Maharashtra,
Karnataka and some others would have more demand and it may consider setting up
even two IIITs in some.
